Anthony McCall: Meeting You Halfway

July 26 – November 30, 2025|Fubon Art Museum, Taipei

We are proud to present Anthony McCall: Meeting You Halfway, the first major solo exhibition in Taiwan by the British-born, New York-based artist Anthony McCall. Spanning five decades of his groundbreaking practice, the exhibition brings together his iconic early performance-based film Landscape for Fire (1972), four representative horizontal Solid Light installations, a maquette-scale vertical study, and a selection of preparatory drawings, photographs, and archival materials. Together, these works form a deeply immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between cinema, sculpture, architecture, and drawing.

McCall is internationally recognized as a pioneer of experimental film and performance art since the 1970s. He revolutionized the cinematic experience by liberating light and shadow from the traditional screen, transforming them into sculptural forms that viewers can physically enter and explore. Since 2003, he has harnessed custom software to meticulously choreograph beams of light in darkened, haze-filled rooms—creating his acclaimed Solid Light series, where light itself becomes a tangible, spatial force.

This exhibition opens with Landscape for Fire, a seminal early work that merges ritualistic performance with the natural landscape, offering a glimpse into McCall’s sustained inquiry into space, time, and perception. His preparatory drawings and documentation reveal the rigorous conceptual underpinnings of his practice, bridging ephemeral light forms with structural and poetic precision.

More than a study of visual form, McCall’s work redefines how we experience art. By extending perception into the spatial relationship between light, body, and architecture, he invites viewers to engage in a contemplative, physical encounter where silence and motion, darkness and illumination, converge.

Positioned between minimalism and poetic sensibility, McCall opens up a new rhythm of seeing—one that invites a slower, more profound connection to self and space. In the context of Fubon Art Museum’s contemporary program, Anthony McCall: Meeting You Halfway offers not only a transformative visual experience but also a meditative dialogue with perception and existence.

Gladys Lin Projects is honored to have contributed to bringing this landmark exhibition to Taiwan. We invite you to step into this luminous architecture of silence, and meet Anthony McCall—halfway.
